Genevieve's Updates

In an atttempt to keep up with technology and to try and keep all of my friends and family up to date with my far flung adventures (and occasionally snips of mundane life) I decided to build a blog spot for easier access. I hope that you all enjoy!

The Universe is Speaking...

Hi Everyone,

Apologies for the lack of communication on our part! We have had a crazy few weeks since I posted last (sorry for the word scramble in the last one, it was an editing mix-up). Our trip to the US was a lot of fun; Terry and I both really enjoyed catching-up with our fantastic US contingent in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Austin. And I finished my first 1,000 mile running log in sunny San Jose, CA, yea!

Aside from good times our trip also brought us a very close call on a round the world move; we came back to South Africa at the end of February expecting to do a quick one week turn around so that Terry could take up a really cool opportunity back in Boston that had come up very unexpectedly. The universe seems to have had other plans for us though because half way through our packing and two days before our expected departure date fate (or something else) intervened and long story short, we are going to be in South Africa for a little longer... So for the US contingent, we'll be there eventually!! and for the South African contingent, we're here a bit longer!!

Terry and I returned this week from a fantastic long weekend in Cape Town (really all trips there are a bit too short for my liking!) I wish I could say that we just decided to go away but we generally only move about with purpose and this was no exception. Once we knew we were in South Africa for a bit longer we decided to go ahead and use the race numbers we had registered for. What race was that you may ask?? It was the Argus, the largest timed bike race in the world. This year about 38,000 riders registered and just over 30,000 were crazy enough to actually show up at the starting line and give it a go...most of them actually finished the very hilly 109km (68 mile) race.

Thanks to Jonny's (Terry's brother-in-law) generosity and forward planning Terry and I (along with his sister Tina and the pilot Darrel) actually got a fantactic sneak peak at the course and a beautiful birds eye view of the cape from the seats of Jonny's Robinson helecopter, yeah he actually owns it! We were both blown away by the experience and are lookng forward to our next trip up! If anyone is a bit afraid of heights don't look too hard at these pics which are birds eye views of our route!

Thankfully the weather cooperated with us for the race and we had overcast skies, a temp of 23C (around 75F), and the wind wasn't too bad overall (I did have some nasty spots though around Cape Point). Unfortunately though, what is becoming the inevitable for me happened; I fell at about the 20km mark after a strap from my gear got tangled in my back wheel and proceeded to lock the wheel in place. Before I could get to the side of the road I was body slammed by another rider and then a second managed to fall on me. Given the circumstances things could be a lot worse but I handled the fall gracefully :) and came away with a handful of cuts, bruises, and a bit of road rash the worst of the injuries being a few bruised ribs (confirmed by the physio). Additionally I can now officially state that I know what it feels like to pass out (not nice) becuse that is exactly what I did in the arms of the medic who helped me off the road (I'll spare you the photos of the wounds). But of course being the stubborn fool I am, and I have to add definitely my mother's daughter in this case, after taking stock of how I felt I decided that I wanted to finish the race. After some kind words from the medic and a chat to Terry to assure him that I was fine and not completely out of my gourd I hopped back on my little black bike and proceeded to pedal for another 5 and a half hours to finish the race (Terry fared much better with no falls and a 3.5 hour ride). I've decided that the universe is trying to communicate with me about these long races since I now have a 100% spectacular fall rate in road races. I think I will have to consider hard before I enter the next one...

We promise to keep you all up on all of our news once we know what's going on but a safe bet will probably have us exploring South Africa until the end of April for now. But then again you never know!

Much Love!
Genevieve and Terry
